What is Presentations by Seniors?
Presentations by Seniors is a intergenerational learning program and speaker's bureau. The goal of the program is to promote cultural awareness and reduce prejudice among school aged children.
Volunteers share their life experiences with students related to significant historical events, including, but not limited to:
The Civil Rights Movement
Holocaust Survivors
Refugee Resettlement
Farm Workers Movement
Japanese Internment
Apartheid in South Africa
Vietnam War
Volunteers encourage students in developing positive life skills and attitudes, self-esteem and appreciation for differences among diverse groups of people.
Life experiences and history are used to teach and encourage acceptance of self and others and the appreciation of differences among diverse groups of people rather than to teach history per se. Presentations are conducted to elementary, junior high, high school, college students and in community settings.
CRITERIA: Must be 55 years of age or older.
TIME COMMITMENT: Minimal. Requests from schools and other venues are periodic. General presentation times are one hour which include time for questions and answers.
SKILLS NEEDED: Must have good communication and facilitation skills and be able to relate well to youth from diverse backgrounds; comfort in presenting to groups and ability to stick to presentation time limits; ability to adapt to changes that may occur at schools; must have reliable transportation.
