The Benefits Assistance Program is part of the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) Network.  September 2010 training is coming!   The next training at the Area Agency in Phoenix will be September 15, 22, 29 and October 6 and 13, 2010.  See Flyer Below**.

Note from a Benefits Assistance Program volunteer:
“I was contacted by the Via Linda Senior Center in Scottsdale to become a Benefits Assistance Counselor. I attended the 5-week course at the Agency and was amazed at what I didn’t know about Medicare, Social Security and related programs.  Ann Marie, at the Agency, did a fantastic job in instructing us on the major aspects of Medicare.  At first, I thought the material provided was overwhelming, but upon further review it all came together.  I have been a counselor for 5 months and find the job very rewarding.  Our clients are always appreciative and thank us for our assistance.  I’ve always believed in giving back to the community that has served me in such wonderful ways.  This volunteer job fulfills my every wish.  I can now communicate with our clients and offer good advice which is greatly needed and gives me the satisfaction of giving back.  I can truly say “This job is fun and the rewards are great.”

Volunteer Counselors provide objective information about Medicare, related insurance and other benefits to seniors, people with disabilities and caregivers.  Basic training consists of 5 days providing a broad overview of Social Security, Medicare, AHCCCS and Long Term Care.  This Basic training is followed by 16 hours of on-the-job training.  Volunteers usually give a standard commitment of 4+ hours per week.   There are various locations throughout the valley where volunteers can participate, as well as, options to provide phone support at the Area Agency on Aging or for the statewide Medicare Hotline. September 2010 training is coming!  See Flyer Below**.
