What is Presentations by Seniors?
Presentations by Seniors is a intergenerational learning program and speaker's bureau. The goal of the program is to promote cultural awareness.
Volunteers share their life experiences related to significant historical events, including, but not limited to:
The Civil Rights Movement
Holocaust Survivors
Refugee Resettlement
Farm Workers Movement
Japanese Internment
Apartheid in South Africa
Vietnam War
Volunteers encourage the development of positive life skills, attitudes, and self-esteem.
Life experiences and history are used to teach and encourage acceptance of self and others and the appreciation of differences among diverse groups of people. Presentations are conducted in community settings.
CRITERIA: Must be 55 years of age or older.
TIME COMMITMENT: Minimal. General presentation times are one hour which includes time for questions and answers. Orientation to the program is individulized and time commitment will vary.
SKILLS NEEDED: Good communication and facilitation skills and ability to relate well to individuals from diverse backgrounds; comfort in presenting to groups and ability to stick to presentation time limits; flexibility with scheduling; must have reliable transportation.
